August Plym was born 1856 in a small town centrally in Sweden. In 1881 he started his boat building career that was to be long and successful. He first took employment at Kummelnas yard. He soon advanced to the manager for the yard and not until 12 years later in 1893 did he decide to start what was to become his life creation and history in Sweden.

August Plym had during his time at Kummelnas yard earned a reputation as a boat builder who always made quality a priority. It was first in the 1890’s that boats started being built as pleasure vessels from the beginning, until then it was mostly converted work boats that became pleasure boats in Sweden.

August Plym used the latest and also developed new techniques for boat building. His was the first boat builder in Sweden to use a combination of steel and steam bend wooden frames in the hulls. His techniques for building hulls where of first class. All hulls where built close-seamed, and to make the hulls fully water tight all wood used was very dry. To avoid the wood absorbing water later when the boat was in the water, linseed oil was applied to the wood during the whole construction time.

August Plym’s yard was named Liljeholmsvarvet and it suffered a bad fire in 1904 that totally destroyed the yard and its offices. The fire was believed to have been started by the linseed oil that was used to treat the hulls during the production. After this the yard was quickly rebuilt. In the fire none of the yachts stored at the yard had been affected very much, but all sails and drawings where lost.

Liljeholmesvarvet was the leader in Sweden during this time when it came to quality production of boats and the employees where very proud. Most new employees where sons of already existing workers who then got there boat building training at the yard.

Plym once said “it is not how much material you use to build a boat that makes is good or bad, it is how you join the material together”. Plym always used only the very best oak and pine available and he had a large stock at his yard. As late an s in the mid 40’s there was still oak in the yard from the Plym era, 20 years after his death!
