Charles E Nicholson’s road to fame as a yacht designer started in 1912 after his 5-meter design ISITRA became very successful on the racing courses. At about the same time a bigger boat he had designed, the class-A schooner MARGHERITA, was equally successful. MARGHERITA managed to win no less the 5 races out of the 6 in the very first season of racing, not a bad performance and such success lead to filed order books for new designs by Charles E Nicholson. It was the success with these yachts and the well established name of the yard Camper and Nicholsons that Charles E Nicholson was the cairman for at the time that eventually lead to the interest from Sir Thomas Lipton. Sir Thomas lipton was looking for a new designer and builder for his 4th attempt to win the Americas Cup. The yacht Charles E Nicholson designed and built for him was the Shamrock IV. Due to the war the challenge was delayed until 1920. Even if Shamrock IV did win the first to races and really stirred up the defender, it lost the following 3 races and the cup stayed in New York.Charles E Nicholson got another 3 atempts to win the America Cup with the yachts SHAMROCK V, ENDEAVOUR and ENDEAVOUR II. With this excellent track record for designing big yachts Charles E Nicholson defenetly contributed much to the developemt of the Americas Cup. Charles E Nicholson ofcourse designed several other yachts during this time, he was well known for designing some of the fastest yachts at the time. He was known as one of the leading designers in the world during his life time. Some yachts from Charles E Nicholson:
