There are many yacht designers who have contributed to the development of sailing yachts over time. Some have done more then others and some have been more revolutionizing then others. If we concentrate on the time period from 1880's, when private yachting really started, to 1950's when plastics started coming we find some great yacht designers.

Arvid Laurin, Yacht Designer

Arvid Laurin was born October 3, 1901 in Lysekil in Sweden. His father was the owner of a company that produced heavy combustion engines. Arvid Laurin graduated as a civil engineer at Chalmers in Gothenburg with the highest grades. Shortly after graduating he started to use his new learned skill designing engines in his fathers business.

August Plym, Yacht Designer

August Plym was born 1856 in a small town centrally in Sweden. In 1881 he started his boat building career that was to be long and successful. He first took employment at Kummelnas yard. He soon advanced to the manager for the yard and not until 12 years later in 1893 did he decide to start what was to become his life creation and history in Sweden.

C O LILJEGREN, Yacht Designer

C O LILJEGREN was born in 1865. he spent many of his early years in USA. It is reported that he during the years 1895-1896 even worked in Bristol under the well known yacht designer Hereshoff. He returned to Sweden in 1897 only to go back to USA in 1898, this time staying for 5-6 years.

Charles E Nicholson, Yacht Designer

Charles E Nicholson’s road to fame as a yacht designer started in 1912 after his 5-meter design ISITRA became very successful on the racing courses. At about the same time a bigger boat he had designed, the class-A schooner MARGHERITA, was equally successful.  MARGHERITA managed to win no less the 5 races out of the 6 in the very first season of racing, not a bad performance and such success lead to filed order books for new designs by Charles E Nicholson.
