Tore Holm was born in Gamleby, Sweden in 1896 as the older son to the founder of the well known ship yard HOLMS YACHT VARV, the legendary Knut Holm. Already at the age of 5 Tore Holm helped, together with his older brother, his father to build the fin-keel racer BRIS in the barn of the family house. Both the brothers get a solid education in the art of yacht building and yacht design from there father, and around 1915 Tore Holm designs his first square meter yacht, but he is not allowed to sign the drawings with his own name, instead they are just stamped with “Knut Holms Yachtvarv”.It is there for not until 1919 that the first official design from Tore Holm is made. It would be the SK55 (square meter yacht) MAYFLOWER. In 1920 Tore Holm earns a reputation with the design of the SK40 SIF. With this yacht Tore and his brother win the Olympic Gold in Antwerp. The following year Tore Holm designs the 20 meter (66 ft) SK95 MARGA IV. This was a design that Tore extended even more and built the yacht BRITT-MARIE. These yachts came to dominate the square meter racing in Sweden and finally led to a change of the design rule in 1924. Tore Holm now started concentrating on designing International Meter Rule yachts. In an attempt to market the Holm designed yachts internationally Tore Holm decides to compete in the Genoa Regatta in 1928 with the Int.6mR yachts LILIAN and VASTANFLAKT. Both the yachts win all races they enter and the orders for Holm designed International Meter Rule yachts start coming in from all over the world, Holms Yachtvarv now became the most productive yard in Sweden! Tore Holm also sailed in the Olympics in 1929 in Amsterdam, but his chances of a gold medal are spoiled by a failure in the rig and he has to settle for a bronze medal. In 1929 Tore Holm also designed and built the Int.6mR yacht BISSBI. Bissbi became the most successful racing yacht ever in Sweden, among the wins where no less then two wins in the “One Tonner Cup”. Sweden has won the One Tonner Cup 11 times, ten of these times it has been in yachts designed by Tore Holm. In 1932 tore Holm skippered Bissi to Olympic gold in Los Angeles. In the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Tore and Sven Salen lost there gold medal through a protest from the Italian team, and had to settle for the bronze medal. Also in the 1948 Olympics in London Tore Holm had to settle for the Bronze medal. However, 2 gold, one silver and 3 bronze from the Olympics is an unmatched success in Swedish sporting from one person! Other successful Int.6mR yachts designed by Tore Holm are "Marianne"(1934), "Ian", "Tidsfordrif" and "Fagel Bla", the "May-be"-yachts are legendary! When the Int.5mR class was introduced in Sweden in 1936 Tore Holm soon became the leading designer for them as well. Only in 1937 Tore designed and built no less then 4 yacht of this class! In 1937 Tore Holm designed a J-Class yacht that was never to be built. The deisgn was not known of for more then 60 years, when it was found by a researcher in Americas Cup history. Many say that the yacht would have been the fastest J-Class to ever be built. And modern tank testing has shown that it would have been faster then the Ranger. According to info, some of the frames for the J-class was actually made, but WW2 but an end to the contruction of the yacht. It is said that the frames still excist in Sweden.
