Since the development of the International Metre Rule some classes developed faster then others. Since the 6mR class was an Olympic class and soon got a large amount of followers it also established a World Cup and a European Cup for the class. This lead too many of the times best designers not only designing 6mR yachts but also racing them themselves.

Today the 6 metre (or meter, as they often are spelled as)  yachts are very popular in racing circuits and the old yacht from rule 1 still race with the newer boats from rule 3 and build today.
The six metre yachts are also popular among viewers for there beautiful lines and classic appeal.
The 6mR yachts are the largest boats that can be transported on trailers and trucks with out to many problems, and the European racing circuit is very active with yachts that travel from one country to another to attend the larger regattas.
There are today also specialist companies who renovate and maintain old classic 6mR yachts and many rich and famous sail a six metre yacht.
The Int 6mR yachts are often called the baby 12’s . The 12mR yachts where previously the class that was used to race in Americas Cup and there for the 6’s where a perfect entry point to this class and gave some experience to the class.
