International Meter Rule

This has to be one of the most successful yacht design rating rule ever! The rule has produced designs ranging from the mini 2.4m sailboat to the massive 23m designs that where used in the early years of the Americas Cup, or rather used to convert in to yachts that could race against the magnificent J-Class yachts.

The Int.12mR was later used for the Americas cup for many years and during this ear the smaller Int.6mR where considered to be “baby” Americas Cup boats. Still today the racing with the Int.6mR yachts is extensive and the yachts are spread all over the world.
Many of the most famous yacht designers in the world have drawn several 6, 8 and 12m yachts under this rule. This includes designers as William Fife III, Tore Holm, Stephen Olin, Hershoff and several others.
The most active classes today are the Int.6mR, Int.8mR and the Int.12mR classes that all have ongoing and successful world cups and regattas all over the world.
Under the international meter rule modern plastics can race with the classic wooden yachts on the same course and in the same race. This has lead to the recent and largely growing interest in restoring the old wooden classics, with several companies specialising in the restorations of yachts in the International Meter Rule class.
Generally the yachts can be considered racing through breads with no accommodation or very little accommodation onboard, built purely for racing.

Here you will find info about each International Meter Rule separately, including some pictures of yachts, list of designers and in some cases lists of active yachts under each rule.
